Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy (CBH)

L4 Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy (UK College of Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy)

Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy (CBH) consists of two evidence-based approaches to change. Individually, each has a capacity to bring about new and more positive ways of thinking, feeling and behaving. However, when used in conjunction with each other, this positive effect is demonstrably increased. In this instance, the therapeutic application of hypnosis, the enhancing and using of our innate capacity for imagination, serves to amplify the powerful and positive effect that CBT can have on our experience of the world.

At all stages it is the client who is in complete control of the process. It is they who choose whether or not hypnosis forms part of our work together, and it is they who will decide the extent to which they wish to learn and apply the skills and insights that will support them in experiencing greater control in their lives in the future.

So, what is Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy (CBH), and what’s it for?

CBH sees hypnosis explained in the context of accepted psychology, rather than being reliant upon the concept of some sort of altered state of consciousness. The problem the client is facing is seen to be the result of a form of “negative hypnosis”, whereby they are responding to automatic thoughts and patterns of behaviour and emotions as if they are unalterable and somehow preordained. Responding to challenges with a combination of CBT and hypnosis allow us to make the most effective use of the greater openness to suggestions that hypnosis provides. It allows us to fully focus on suggestions that build and reinforce the positive thoughts, feelings and behaviours that enable us to achieve our goals.
CBH is proven to be effective in many areas including;

  • Stress Management and Relaxation
  • Anxiety
  • Confidence Building
  • Performance Improvement
  • Deep Relaxation
  • Habit Removal
  • Smoking Cessation

So, what will we do?

We’ll start with an initial 15 minute call, during which you can give me some sense of the challenge you’re facing, and of the goal you want to achieve. It will also give each of us the chance to determine whether we have a sense that we can work well together.

It’s important at this point to stress that working with me means you are choosing and committing to be a joint collaborator in the process of change. We will each have a role to play, and we’ll both need to be committed to engaging fully and actively in our work together.

Assuming that we choose to proceed, we’ll then schedule an initial assessment session of between 60 – 90 minutes. During the session we’ll explore any issues in more depth and agree a plan of action, outlining what we will be doing and over how many sessions. While the number of sessions may vary, generally a programme would consist of between 4 – 6 sessions.

We will then proceed to complete the programme, with a session by session review of progress. You can also expect to take on tasks between sessions, putting into practice things you may have learnt, and applying them in your everyday life.

What won’t happen!

I won’t take control of your mind! - You are in complete control at all times. You will only agree to suggestions that are aligned with your values and beliefs.

I won’t “magic away” your problems or dilemmas – Hypnosis is something we do together. The responsibility and the credit for change is all yours, I’ll simply support you on the journey.
